 In gilded Saudi royal circles, corruption has long been a way of life.

Leading intellectuals in Saudi Arabia have warned that grand financial gestures are no substitute for meaningful political reform.

Juan Carlos I, who was Spain's monarch for nearly 40 years, left the country less than two months after Supreme Court prosecutors opened a money-laundering probe against the former monarch following reports that he had taken over $100 million (€85 million) from Saudi Arabia.

U.S. reserves right to sanction Saudi crown prince if necessary - White House

 The United States reserves the right to sanction Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the future if necessary, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Monday. “Of course we reserve the right to take any action at a time and manner of our choosing,” Psaki said at a briefing, adding that, “Historically, the United States through Democratic and Republican presidents has not typically sanctioned government leaders of countries where we have diplomatic relations.”

 American security contractor Erik Prince, a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, violated the U.N. arms embargo against Libya along with three United Arab Emirates-based companies and their top managers during an operation to help a rebel military commander take the capital Tripoli, U.N. experts said. In a key section of a report to the U.N. Security Council obtained Saturday by The Associated Press, the panel of experts outlined “a well-funded private military company operation” called “Project Opus” designed to provide military equipment to eastern-based commander Khalifa Hifter. “The Project Opus plan also included a component to kidnap or terminate individuals regarded as high value targets in Libya,” the experts said.
